I'm testing a couple of things here:

How well Blogger preserves presentation markup in cut and paste;
How much text e-Sword allows to be cut at one swoop;

Now hoping that:

The Bible Society that created this translation does not send a cease and desist notice;
The government of the country where this language is used, does send a cease and desist notice;

(16) Laban semua utai di dunya tu — utai ti dikinginka tubuh, utai ti dikinginka mata, temegahka pengaya — ukai datai ari Apai, tang datai ari dunya. (17) Lalu dunya enggau pengingin iya[m] deka lenyau, tang orang ke ngereja peneka Allah Taala deka idup belama iya. (18)
Jaku Tangkan Pasal Munsuh Kristus
* Anak, tu meh pengujung dunya! Munyi ti udah didinga kita, Munsuh Kristus deka datai. Nya alai diatu mayuh Munsuh Kristus udah datai. Nya meh jalai kitai nemu pengujung dunya udah datai. (19) Sida pansut ari bala kitai, tang sida ukai raban kitai, laban enti sida raban kitai, sida tentu agi meruan begulai enggau kitai. Tang lebuh sida pansut ari bala kitai, nya nyata nunjukka sida ukai raban kitai.
(20) Tang kita udah ditata Iya ti Kudus,[n] lalu semua kita bisi penemu.[o] (21) Aku nulis ngagai kita, ukai laban kita enda nemu pemendar, tang laban kita nemu pemendar, lalu kita nemu, nadai pemula kala datai ari pemendar.
(22) * Sapa orang ke bula? Orang ke bula nya orang ke ngumbai Jesus nya ukai Kristus.[p] Nya meh Munsuh Kristus, orang ke besangkalka Apai enggau Anak. (23) * Nadai orang ke besangkalka Anak, bisi Apai dalam iya; barang sapa ngaku Anak, bisi Apai dalam iya.

Anak Allah Taala
* Enti kita nemu Kristus endang lurus, kita patut nemu, semua orang ke ngereja utai ti lurus,[t] endang diadaka Iya magang.

Anak Allah Taala
* Peda kita pemesai pengerindu Apai ke kitai, datai ke kitai nyau dikumbai anak Allah Taala, laban kitai endang amat anak Iya. Kebuah dunya enda ngelala kitai nya laban dunya enda ngelala Iya. (2) Menyadi ke dikerinduka aku, kitai diatu udah nyadi anak Allah Taala. Gaya kitai ti jemah ila apin dipandangka. Utai ti ditemu kitai nya, lebuh Iya dipandangka, kitai deka sebaka enggau Iya, laban kitai deka meda Iya mua mata. (3) Lalu semua orang ke bisi pengadang tu ke Kristus, nuchi diri empu, baka Kristus Empu ke endang tuchi.
(4) Genap iku orang ke bedosa endang ngelanggar adat, laban reti dosa nya ngelanggar adat. (5) * Kita nemu, Kristus pegari ngambika Iya muai dosa,[u] lalu Iya Empu endang nadai dosa dalam Iya. (6) Semua orang ke meruan dalam Iya, enda agi majak bedosa. Semua orang ke majak bedosa nadai udah kala meda tauka ngelala Iya.
(7) Anak, anang nejuka orang nipu kita! Genap iku orang ke ngereja utai ti badas, endang amat lurus baka Kristus Empu. (8) * Genap iku orang ke bedosa endang anak Sitan, laban Sitan endang udah bedosa kenyau ari pun. Kebuah Anak Allah Taala dipandangka nya ngambika Iya ngerusak pengawa Sitan.
(9) * Orang ke udah diadaka Allah Taala enda agi bedosa laban benih Allah Taala meruan dalam sida; sida enda ulih bedosa laban sida udah diadaka Allah Taala. (10) Baka tu ku jalai kita ngelala sapa ke anak Allah Taala, enggau sapa ke anak Sitan: barang sapa enda diau lurus, ukai anak Allah Taala. Orang ke enda rinduka menyadi diri, ukai anak Allah Taala. Rinduka Pangan Diri
* Laban tu pesan ti udah didinga kita kenyau ari pun: rinduka pangan diri. (12) * Kitai enda tau baka Kain ke endang enggi[v] Sitan, lalu iya munuh menyadi iya Abel. Nama kebuah iya munuh Abel? Laban utai ti dikereja iya jai, lalu utai ti dikereja menyadi iya, lurus.
(13) * Anang tekenyit ati, menyadi, enti dunya begedika kita. (14) * Kitai nemu diri udah meraka ari pemati ngagai pengidup, laban kitai rinduka pangan diri. Barang sapa enda rinduka pangan diri, mengkang dalam pemati. (15) * Semua orang ke begedika pangan[w] diri endang pemunuh, lalu kita nemu, orang ke pemunuh nadai pengidup ti meruan belama iya dalam iya. Kempang Bediri Di Mua Allah Taala
Nya meh jalai kitai nemu diri enggi pemendar, lalu kempang ati bediri di mua Iya (20) genap kali ati kitai besalahka kitai; laban Allah Taala besai agi ari ati kitai, lalu Iya nemu semua utai. (21) * Menyadi ke dikesayauka aku, enti ati kitai enda besalahka kitai, kitai berani bediri di mua Allah Taala; (22) lalu nerima ari Iya sebarang utai ti dipinta kitai, laban kitai ngasika pesan Iya, lalu ngereja utai ti ngerinduka ati Iya. (23) * Lalu tu pesan Iya: arapka nama Anak Iya Jesus Kristus, lalu rinduka pangan diri, munyi ti udah diasuh Iya kereja kitai. Roh Ti Bendar Enggau Roh Ti Pelesu
Menyadi, anang arapka semua roh, tang uji roh nya dulu kena nentuka roh nya datai ari Allah Taala; laban mayuh nabi ti pelesu udah pansut ngagai dunya. (2) Baka tu ku jalai kita ngelala Roh Allah Taala: semua roh[x] ke ngaku Jesus Kristus udah datai nyadi mensia, nya roh ti datai ari Allah Taala, (3) * lalu semua roh ke enda ngaku [y] Jesus udah datai nyadi mensia, ukai roh ti datai ari Allah Taala. Roh nya roh Munsuh Kristus, ke udah didinga kita deka datai, lalu endang udah bisi di dunya tu diatu.
(4) Tang kita, anak, endang enggi Allah Taala, lalu kita udah ngalahka sida,[z] laban Iya[a] ke dalam kita lebih agi bekuasa[b] ari iya[c] ke di dunya. He makes a good point in dividing apps into three groups:
* Bible Readers;
* Digital Bible Study;
* Public domain only material;
I haven't kept count, but the majority of so-called Bible applications I've come across are of the third type. There is nothing wrong with public domain content. However, i've seen some extremely expensive packages for content that is available gratis in other formats.
The biggest difference between his list of recommended software, and mine is:
# The Sword Project: He excludes it. I include/highly recommend it;
* Accordance: He includes it. I exclude it, because it is not cross-platform. Mac OS X and iOS version. [Correction added after commentator pointed out my error.];
* WordSearch: He includes it. I exclude it, because it is not cross-platform. Windows only. Mobile device versions are under development;
* Mantis Bible: He includes it. I exclude it, because it is iOS only;
% GloBible: He includes it. It has not hit my radar. Looking at the website: Mac, PC, iPhone, iPod touch, iPad. What they mean is Mac OS X, WinXP/Vista/7, and iOS. The website is amazingly silent on the theological bias of the maps. It is equally silent on the supported canon;

Selecting Biblical Software: Future Proofing

A New York Times editorial ( http://www.nytimes.com/2010/06/20/opinion/20sun4.html ) pondered on replacing cell phones. Clouds cites thirty three months as the life expectancy of a cell phone. ( http://www.cloudsmagazine.com/cellphone-reviews-and-news/the-spanish-mobile-home-to-nearly-two-and-a-half-years.html )

Laptops and desktops are routinely replaced every three to five years. Those who want the latest and greatest will update their system at least once a year. When the computer is replaced, the operating system and software is replaced. The file format used by the older software is usually not readable by the newer software. In some instances, a program update can remove the ability to read data.

Hard copy books are expensive. Nobody denies that. Even at thrift stores, a 1,000 volume theological library will set one back between two and three thousand dollars. Purchased new from CBD, one's wallet will be at least ten thousand dollars lighter. Purchased elsewhere, one could easily be down twenty to thirty thousand dollars. However, with a hard copy book, the book is mine to use as I see fit. If I want to decorate it with ten thousand different colors, I can do so. If I want to add so many notes to it, that I can't read the original text, I can do so. If I want to give it away, I can do so. If my great-niece wants to study it, she can do so.

With software, and data for software, what is sold is a license to use the material. One does own the content in any meaningful, or even meaningless way. (I'm aware of the Denver Federal Court of Appeals ruling that implies that when one purchases a DVD from Target, one purchases the copyright to all of the content on that DVD. That unfortunate ruling is best described as an aberration by judges who failed to understand both the facts of that specific case, and the law that was being argued by the defendant. There have been repeated demonstrations that the plaintiff knowingly and willfully attempted to mislead everybody.)

By licensing content, and refusing all rights, with the possible exception of viewing the content, the license holder can require the licensee to do anything. As Amazon has demonstrated, that includes removing content from one's system. (The other major book whose removal would starkly emphasis the plot, would be removing Fahrenheit 451.)

A "safe bet" is that your next computer will require software that is incompatible with your existing computer.
Two things to note:

What an organization claims about its software need not be objectively factual;
Two programs with the same name, but run on different platforms, need not have anything in common;

Whilst some organizations that provide software for three or more different platforms, also provide tools to migrate between those platforms, that does not mean that all resources will be migrated. Those tools are useful only if both your old platform, and your new platform are supported by the vendor. The cost of that migration can range from gratis to effectively repurchasing the entire library again.

For all practical purposes, there is only one organization¹ whose data can be relied upon, to migrate smoothly from your old platform, to your new platform: The Sword Project. This is a function of:

TSP supporting more platforms than any other organization;
Copyright holders being terrified of the ramifications of Open Source Software;

Even more important than migrating to a new platform is: "What happens if your vendor goes out of business?" Will you still be able to use your software?

If the resources are on your system, and the software to use it does not require a call home, then you will be able to use the software:

If the resource is in the virtual cloud, it won't be available for you to use when the cloud is not available. Your Internet connection might be down. The Internet connection of the virtual cloud vendor might be down. Internet congestion might delay packets so much that the system times out;
If the software requires calling home, Microsoft has repeatedly demonstrated that even legitimate, authenticated software can be mis-labeled as "pirated", simply because the authentication systems are down, or otherwise functioning incorrectly;

Taking another common situation. You've spent hours studying the Bible using the software. Can you easily export your work product into an ISO certified file format, for use elsewhere? (The short answer to that answer is "no", because none of the currently available Biblical software supports ISO certified file formats.)

Alternatively, can you export your work product into something that can be easily converted into an ISO certified file format, without losing either presentation markup, or semantic markup?

For clergy, and those employed by religious organizations, the inability to export work product to another file format, might put them in breach of their contract with their employer. For those employees that don't have written contracts, some case law in the United States supports the legal theory that the intellectual property rights of your work product are owned by the organization that hired you, and as such, your failure to turn over that work product, regardless of the reason for that failure, means that you have stolen their property.

eBook Readers for Bible Study

I miss e-Sword on the Android platform.

I have tried other Biblical Software programs, but the trial/gratis versions don't meet my needs. If the gratis version is a fail, why should I expect the non-gratis version to not fail?

One of the Biblical blogs I follow suggested using an ebook reader for the material that is not available in a format usable by the Biblical software one uses. On the face of it, that is a sound suggestion. As a practical matter it fails. Maybe I tried the wrong ebook reader software, but none that I tried offered the ability to search by Subject, Dewey Decimal Number, Cutter Number, Library of Congress Catalog Number, or any other standard method of organizing large book collections.

Case in point. For today's Bible Study I wanted to check a reference in The Didache. I have four ebooks that contain it. I don't remember the names of those books. With e-Sword, a search for "Didache" in the Reference Library component brings up the ten copies I have in e-Sword refx format.

One of the organizations that creates Biblical Software for mobile devices claims that people won't carry their theological library in their mobile device. Two years ago I would have agreed with them. Today, I disagree. The more one uses one's theological library in one's usual Bible study, the more difficult it becomes to study the Bible without it being present.

BibleSupport.com: 6007 and counting

On 13 June 2011, BibleSupport.com setup services. Today (2 November 2011) has 6012 members. (Five people signed up between the time I started writing this point, and published it.)

By way of comparison, eSword@yahoogroups.com, the largest email support list for e-Sword, took six or seven years to reach 6,000 subscribers. Currently, it (esword@yahoogroups.com) has 7,377 subscribers.

I have mislaid my data for e-Sword-users.org. My recollection is that took more than a year to reach the 6,000 member mark.

Whilst the news announcement Growth in September ( http://www.biblesupport.com/page/e-sword-modules-message-board.html/_/news/growth-in-september-r36 ) is now two months old, it shows how their bandwidth usage has grown. The current tagline proclaims "6,012 members downloaded 226,988 resources."

Pulpit Commentary (all 66 books) for e-Sword has been downloaded 4,988 times.

If you upload three resources, you'lll have a place in the top twenty file submitters.
If you upload one hundred resources, you'll have a place in the top five file submitters.
To have a place in the top twenty file downloaders, you'll have to download 1,400 files.
To have a place in the top five file downloaders, you'll have to download every e-Sword resource that BIbleSupport.com offers.

Things that BibleSupport did right, and e-Sword-users did wrong:

Make it easy for users to submit resources;
Make it easy for users to download resources;
Run a bot that scours the Internet looking for e-Sword resources;

The major enhancement is the new component RefX. These are topical files that have been compressed, and display in a floating frame.

From the testing I've done, the only two changes I'd like, for this specific e-Sword 10.0.4, or e-Sword 10.0.5 release, for the general user, are:

Restoring the STEP icon;
Provide a way for users to hide/display the ruler in the editing window;

The following video was made on an eMachine T2356 running Windows XP. (512 MB RAM, 3200 AMD Athalon XP chip. 1,819 e-Sword resources, 3.88 GB data.) I I do not recommend this configuration for normal, daily use. This is part of my stress test of e-Sword 10.0.1. Things that ought to break, perform poorly, or otherwise be used to show potential points of failure.

Selecting Biblical Software: Data Portability

PDAs, as stand alone devices are, for all practical purposes, dead. Arguably single function electronic devices, such as GPS units, eBook readers, and mp3 players, are dying.

Phones have become multi-function devices. Carriers differentiates between three types of phones:

The dumb mobile phone;
The feature phone;
The smart phone;

Mobile cell phone carriers are phasing out the "dumb mobile phone". This phone can make and receive phone calls and text messages. The feature phone is the low end version of a phone with PDA functionality. The smart phone is the high end version of a phone with PDA functionality.

"Mobile Device" is a catch all phrase that refers to any device that has Internet connectivity, does not require an external power source, and can be easily carried. It includes, but is not limited to mobile phones, PDAs, Tablets, netbooks, ebooks, and laptops.

Tablet: These are mobile devices that have a touch screen. The most common tablets run either Android Operating System, or iOS.

Netbook. The original definition of a netbook was a low cost, low power device that could be used anywhere. Microsoft, in a self-admitted abuse of its monopoly, redefined the term, to try to prevent the widespread adoption of Linux.

Laptop: These are computers that do not require an external power source. Mac OS X is the most common operating system in this space.

Desktop: These are computers that require an external power source. Typically, they have more RAM, and more disk storage space that laptops. Desktops are sold with Windows Operating System due to contracts that grant extremely unfavourable terms to OEMS that ship systems without a Microsoft operating system.

Cloud Server: These are computers that serve up applications to you. Typically, the server is controlled by a third party. Linux is the most common operating system in this space.

Game Console: This are units that are specifically designed for playing games. Examples are the Wii, x-Box 360, and Sony Playstation 3.

Are the same resources available for your:

Can content be synchronized between two, or more devices?

Whilst the question is aimed at users of, say, a tablet, and a desktop, it also applies to users with a desktop at home, and a desktop at work.

Ideally, the tool resides on one device, and enables transmission to the other device, without going through any network that is not owned, controlled and operated by the user.

Does that synchronization require the assistance of a third party?

With the rise of third party vendors such as DropBox, it has become fairly simple to synchronize between devices of the same type.

The problem with third party vendors, is that your data may not stay private. Whilst a copy of the NIV, or KJV probably won't be damaging, personal notes could be extremely damaging. The things that an individual struggles with.

Laridian offers tools to ease the migration between devices. These tools can also be used to synchronize between devices. The downside is that Laridian confines itself to the mobile device space.

Olive Tree offers a clear migration between devices. They also appear to offer synchronization between devices. However, like Laridian, they confine themselves to the mobile device space.

Logos: The 800 pound gorilla in the Biblical Software market. They offer a version for Windows Operating System, Mac OS X, iOS, and Android. Their current expectation is that one will use either Mac OS X, or Windows Operating System, on one's major device. Android and iOS devices are viewed as secondary devices. Whilst it is possible to use Logos exclusively on one of the two latter, one loses a number of the virtues of the desktop edition. Furthermore, some copyright holders have not allowed their content to be distributed on specific platforms.

The Sword Project offers more front ends, for more platforms, than any other organization that delivers Biblical software. It does not provide tools to migrate between platforms. It does not provide tools to synchronize between platforms. The documentation does cover ways to easily do both functions, using basic command line operations.

The need for data portability is driven by the number of platforms that are available to one. If one only has one device, then there is nothing to synchronize with. One either has the device, or does not have the device.

The problems occur when one has two or more devices. The resource may be on a device that one does not have with one. Transferring notes may require rewriting them by hand. How frequently these issues occur, depends upon how frequently one uses two or more different devices.

There are two different ways that data portability can be defined:

The same file format is usable on all platforms;
The same content can be converted between platforms;

The Sword Project is an example of the same file format being usable on all platforms. This approach usually restricts software to the limitations of the least powerful hardware that it can be run on.

Laridian data portability is achieved through the use of vendor supplied and based conversion software.

Pocket e-Sword/e-Sword data portability is achieved through the use of user provided conversion software.

I have a desktop computer, and smartphone. These devices run different operating systems. I use e-Sword on the desktop, and Pocket e-sword on the smartphone. However, if it was not for the availability of Ben's e-Sword Tool v 2.0, I would not be able to migrate resources between e-Sword, and Pocket e-Sword. I was given a Xoom for my birthday. I have to use yet another Biblical software program for that device. There is software that converts between e-Sword and MySword. It can run on either the Xoom, or the desktop. This is data portability by using user provided conversion software.

Were I to switch to Bible Time or Xiphos on my desktop, SwordReader or Bible Time Mini for the Smartphone, and AndBible on the Xoom, then the data portability is achieved through the use of the same file format.

For users, the issue is what the license permits, and prohibits. It is all too easy to click through a license, when installing new software. US Courts have consistently upheld that click-through licenses are legally binding.

Select software that allows one to do the type of Bible Study one desires.

The Terms of Use of The Watchtower Library CD states

Obviously this restricts individuals that are not Jehovah's Witnesses from using this software.

A clause from the license for Bible Analyzer:

Bible Analyzer must not be used to criticize, undermine, subvert, or in any way question the accuracy and integrity of biblical Christianity or the Authorized King James Version of 1611 or 1769.

The Watch Tower Bible and Tract Society, The Holy Roman Catholic, and Apostolic Church, and The Living Stream Ministry all claim to practice Biblical Christianity. The theology of those three groups is so different from each other, that one might not realize that they used the same source, to come to their mutually exclusive conclusions.

Does that clause permit you to use the Biblical software where you teach others?

In other Biblical software I've seen clauses about payment of property tax, legality of using the software, and non-commercial usage, amongst other things.

Read the license carefully. Understand what words, phrases, clauses, sentances, and paragraphs mean. If you don't understand something, find out what it means, before accepting the license.

Selecting Biblical Software: Biblical Canon Supported

Biblical Canon Supported

I use the Orthodox Christian Canon. As such I consider the absence of support for the Anagignoskomena to be a bug.

For those that use the 66 Book Protestant Canon, the presence of support for the Anagignoskomena is often considered to be a bug.

Which Biblical Canon to support, is the perogative of the developer of the Biblical software.

If the Biblical software does not support the Biblical canon that one uses, then one can not grow in the Lord, by using that software. That sounds harsh, but consider the following examples of hypothetical Biblical software:

Support is present for the Torah, Psalms, and Gospels. No support for other books, because the developer, following the teachings of his faith, considers them to be heretical;
Support is present for the 22 Book Peshita. No support for other books, because the developer considers them to be heretical;

How well can you teach the core principles and articles of your Christian faith, using either of those canons?
How much better equipped would you be, to teach the core principles and articles of your Christian faith, using the Biblical canon of your faith?

Selecting Bible Study Software

Since I've been asked twice in the last week why I don't use Bible Study Program X, it seems appropriate to blog once more about selecting Biblical Software.

Criteria Set One:

Biblical Canon Supported;
Software license permits one to use it forwhat one intends to use the software for;

Cross Platform Support;

Criteria Set Three: Bible Study Methods:
I'm aware of roughly 200 different ways to study the Bible. Most of them fall into one of the following six categories:

Book, chapter, verse orientated;
Chronologically orientated;
Creed/Catechism orientated;
Original Language orientated;
Topically orientated;
Who/where orientated;

How many of those points of departure are supported out of the box by the software?

Criteria Set Four: Accessibility:

Criteria Set Five: The 2009 SBL Bible Software Shootout:

These were the five challenges each presenter had to address:

1. Give the parsing of a word and its meaning from a standard source.

2. Show all the occurrences of a word in the NT and LXX and show the Hebrew word which corresponds with the Greek in the LXX (if there is a correspondence).

3. Find all the occurrences of oi de in Matthew’s gospel followed by a finite verb within the clause.

4. I want to study a part of speech, e. g., demonstrative pronouns or interjections. How do I get all of the lemmas for that part of speech, get all the occurrences of those lemmas, and the results organized in such a way that I could write an article/monograph on that part of speech from the data?

5. I want to study the inflections of the Hebrew middle weak verb, and I want to see what the range of possible variations is for each of the conjugations (perfect, imperative, etc.) person, number, gender, and stem. This means I need to find all the middle weak verbs, find all their occurrences, and organize them in such a way that the variation of their inflections are immediately apparent. The goal of the data organization would be to allow me to write an article about the variations of the Hebrew middle weak verb

As best as I can determine, there are no IRC rooms for either Pocket e Sword or e Sword support.

3: Social Networks and Related objects

I do not recommend any social networking sites. The risks⁵ outweigh any virtues⁶ that social networking sites may have once offered.

This list of social networking sites where e Sword users are known to gather, is very incomplete.

Dating sites are a subset of Social Networking sites. I do not list any Dating sites in this document. At least one dating site includes a question about e Sword usage, as part of its questionnaire in matching people.

Some online games are listed here, because attempts to establish an e Sword user community have been made. In this respect, the online games are akin to small social networking sites.

Facebook

There are a dozen pages on which one can "like" e Sword. Several pages purport to be the official e Sword FaceBook page.

In mid-2009, an attempt to construct an e Sword user community was made.

There are 48.300 hits for “e-Sword” on my space. There are two or three pages that claim to be the official e Sword site. They all appear to have been abandoned years ago.

FLOSS OS and applications for Christian Organizations

In looking into setting up a foundation to take over e-Sword-users.org, one thing that repeatedly struck me, was that no Linux distro targeted the non-profit sector.

At least three quarters of the charitable organizations in England, do not meet the financial criteria that requires that they be registered with The Charitable Commission of England and Wales. Not only is their gross annual revenue under five thousand pounds, but the trustees do not anticipate it exceeding that amount.

The poll at the eSword list was in favour of the site running as a one man operation. (34%)
The poll at e-sword-users.org was in favour of forming a non-profit organization. (45%)

Because the polls had different wording, the results can not be accurately merged together. However, adding the votes for "incorporate" from the eSword list poll, and the votes for "incorporate as a non-profit" from the e-Sword-users poll, gives us 89 votes. (The 93 votes results when one includes votes for "incorporate as a for-profit" in that tally.)

This strategy does require a professional accountant, to ensure that all transactions are "at an arm's length".

Taxes

Over the past week, I've been reading publications issued by various tax authorities. I hope that I misunderstood them. This is one reason why I want a professional accountant on board.

Do we really have to file a Tax return in Australia, because we received donations from Australia? And a tax return in Canada, because we received donations from Canada? I am not opposed to filing the required paperwork. I am not opposed to publicly providing copies of the financials to the general public. Indeed, one of the job requirements of the treasurer/accountant is to make weekly and monthly posts stating the income and outgo of the website.

Unless there is a software program that automatically spits out the paperwork required for each of the 192 countries that have seats in the UN, or the 194 (+ 1) countries recognized by the United States, or the 203 countries listed as such in Wikipedia, or the 248 countries on the ISO 3166 list, or the 320 countries on the Traveller's Century Club list, it is not physically possible for one individual to fill out the paperwork that each potential entity might require.

I've been looking at PDAs to put on my wishlist:

RFE: BeST 3.x Standard Version : E-Sword

BeST 2.1.0.1 is a great tool.

Currently, two open resource types can not be created using BeST.

Harmony Modules
Topical Files

I _think_ that they are on Ben's to do list. I'm not aware any issues that mitigate against tools that can create these resources.

The following resource types are officially closed, but the specifications have been publicly distributed:

Bookmark
Map/Graphic files;
Verse Lists

User created Map resources tend to destabilize e-Sword, and as such, keeping that format closed makes sense.

Bookmark is a verse list with the filename of bookmark.lst. The major issue with a tool that imports this resource type, is that it is supposed to be a closed format.

The following resource types are closed:

Bible Reading plans
Localization
Markup
Prayer Requests
Scripture Memory Verse
Sermon Illustration
Study Notes
Verse Analysis

Both the Localization and Sermon Illustration component were created for a specific resource. There is no legitimate reason for a tool to create this resource type.

I'm not sure what the virtue of a user created verse analysis resource would be, especially since only one --- common.anl --- can be used by e-Sword

Inasmuch as BeST can create Commentaries, the ability to create Study Notes is redundant/irrelevant.

Bible Reading Plans, Markup, Prayer Requests, and Scripture Memory Verse, are closed. As a general rule, these (as well as Verse List ) are usually created by an individual for their personal use. I am aware of exceptions for all five ( New_Christian_Bible_Reading_Plan.brp, Rainbow_Bible.ovl, Praying_the_Psalms.prl, The_Roman_Road.mem, and Elohist.lst, respectively).

Whilst it wouldn't be useful for me, adding the ability to import USFM would enhance the usability of BeST by various organizations. Whether or not the programming required to add that functionality, can be justified by the limited number of users of USFM, is a question I do not know the answer to --- especially since there are tools that convert USFM to OSIS.

Rick released e-Sword 9.9.1 earlier today.

From what I understand, it is basically bug fixes, for certain values of "basically", and certain values of "bug fixes".

Here is a screenshot of e-Sword 9.9.1 on my system.
This screenshot demonstrates a feature that Rick has restored to e-Sword. :)
This feature is something I think enhances Bible study.

RFE: Synchronization Tools

I've been using both Pocket e-Sword and e-Sword for Bible Study. I'd like to have a tool that synchronizes e-Sword and Pocket e-Sword data.

Bible Reading Plans
Markup
Prayer Requests List
Scripture Memory Verse
Study Notes
Verse Lists

The Non-Technical issue is if Rick will approve the creation of, and distribution of a tool that synchronizes e-Sword and Pocket e-Sword content/resources. All of these formats are "closed". Currently, they can only be created from within Pocket e-Sword.(In theory, this also holds true for e-Sword.) No publicly available tools can be utilized to create these resources for Pocket e-Sword.

Technical Issues
e-Sword can utilize the Orthodox Canon. Pocket e-Sword is limited to the Catholic Canon. For most users, the differences will not be an issue. For the rest, the differences might be enough to preclude using Pocket e-Sword.

Bible Reading Plans
In theory, the Bible Reading Plans for both e-Sword and Pocket e-Sword are limited to the Protestant Canon. In practice, some users have created Bible Reading Plans that include the Anagignoskomena for e-Sword. These might not be synchronizable with Pocket e-Sword.

Markup
Pocket e-Sword offers highlighting by verse only. The colour palette offers 9 colours, and "delete highlighting". This highlighting is version agnostic.
e-Sword offers both underlining (thin line, thick line, wavy line, dashed line, no underlining) and highlighting. The initial palette offers six choices. An expanded palette of 48 colours is available. Users can create a custom palette of up to sixteen colours. Users can either highlight, or underline anything from a single character, to the entire chapter. This markup is resource specific.

Prayer Requests List
I don't know how many times I've been asked to add somebody to my prayer list, and done so, on my PDA. However , that list doesn't get transferred to my Linux Box. I haven't found any functional differences between e-Sword and Pocket e-Sword, in how they handle Prayer Requests. [I need to point out that e-Sword allows for multiple Prayer Request Lists. Pocket e-Sword only allows for one Prayer Request List.]

Scripture Memory Verse
Pocket e-Sword appears to restrict verses to the Protestant Canon. My test might have been a simple "bad" abbreviation, to cause an endless chain of error messages. (I used 1 Mac 1:1, rather than 1Ma 1:1.) Other than that, I'm not aware of any technical issues in synchronizing between e-Sword and Pocket e-Sword.

Study Notes
If Pocket e-Sword can display the specific verse, a user can add a note for that verse. However, user created Bibles that include content from the Anagignoskomena tend to have issues. (Not surprising, since Pocket e-Sword doesn't officially support the Anagignoskomena.) Those issues may hamper synchronization between e-Sword and Pocket e-Sword.

Rather than synchronizing, or attempting to synchronize the study notes, create/merge a commentary file that contains updated entries from both the e-Sword and Pocket e-Sword study not files. Doing this would also simplify the distribution of one's study notes. (Users are free to create their own notes about one's commentary --- two or more instances of e-Sword can be run at the same time.)

Verse Lists
Pocket e-Sword doesn't allow for the creation of a permanent verse list. Under some circumstances, it appears that the verse list is not deleted when Pocket e-Sword is closed. (I haven't spent much time in to determining when I lose my verse list, and when I don't. Soft resets will delete the existing verse list. Resource Creation Issues
As a general rule, these resource types are usually created by an individual for their personal use. The rest of this post covers why users might want to be able to create these resources from content that they did not create.

Bible Reading Plans
e-Sword and Pocket e-Sword enable one to create a Bible Reading Plan for the Protestant Canon only. No provision is made for the Anagignoskomena.

A function that e-Sword does not include, is the ability to track the number of times one has read a specific Bible Reading Plan. A Bible reading Plan that includes reading the book n times, is useful for instances such as New_Christian_Bible_Reading_Plan.brp, ( http://e-sword-users.org/users/node/426 for e-Sword 8.x, http://e-sword-users.org/users/node/3026 for e-Sword 9.x ) where the same books are read three or four times, in the first six months.

For new users, the lack of preconfigured Bible Reading Plans _might_ be an issue. (Findex claims that over 200 preconfigured Bible Reading Plans are included in Quickverse 2010, up from 125 plus in previous versions.) Perhaps some of the 5 000 + different BRPs that can be created from within e-Sword can be distributed as user created resources.

For experienced users the inability to construct Bible Reading Plans such as New_Christian_Bible_Reading_Plan.brp from within e-Sword and/or Pocket is an inconvenience.   On the flipside, how many specialized Bible Reading Plans are there?   Lectionary and Daily Office readings should be Devotional resources, not BRPs.

Because the process of creating a Bible Reading Plan manually is error prone, a tool that imports the readings, and verifies that they are "correct", would be useful.   ( "Correct" here means refers to an actual passage in the Bible. )

Markup
A few years ago I stumbled across The Rainbow Bible (Not legally distributable as an e-Sword resource) . http://www.standardpub.com/bibles/main.html should link to a page that describes this Bible. I later on a stumbled across a Bible that used highlighting to demarcate the different documents defined by The Documentary Hypothesis (Not currently available as an e-Sword resource). My guess is that I've come across less than a dozen books or documents, that could be distributed with markup.ovl as a one component, if they were converted to e-Sword format.

The only other situation in which distribution of markup.ovl makes sense, is if one is creating a replicate of a personal bible, and wants to include the highlighting, underlining, and sidelining that the individual did, instead of only the written notes. Written notes are usually best distributed as a commentary resource.

Prayer Requests List
When Rick added this component, I doubt he had Praying_The_Psalms.prl (Not currently available as an e-Sword resource) as a potential resource. OTOH, its flexibility does enable one to construct rosary.prl (Not currently available as an e-Sword resource) so that the appropriate prayers each day are made --- regardless of whether the 15 or 20 decade version is used.

A tool that enable the creation of this resource type would be used by very few people. Seriously, how many times does one see a list of people, etc to pray for?   I usually get additions one at a time. On the flip side, such a tool might be useful for the church secretary, to enable the church to email the current prayer list, as an e-Sword resource, to every member of the congregation. It also would be useful to those who convert breviaries, and similar material into the appropriate e-Sword resource.

Scripture Memory Verse
There are hundreds, if not thousands of lists of verses to memorize out there. Navigator's Topical Memory System (Not legally available as an e-Sword resource) is probably the best known commercially distributed list. The Roman Road ( roman_road.mem http://e-sword-users.org/users/node/73 for e-Sword 8.x) is probably best known one that is freely available.

A tool that imports a list of verses would remove some of the drudgery involved in creating these resources from within e-Sword. It also could parse the verse references, altering them to an abbreviation that e-Sword and Pocket e-Sword recognize.

Study Notes
If Pocket e-Sword can display the specific verse, a user can add a note for that verse. However, user created Bibles that include content from the Anagignoskomena tend to have issues. (Not surprising, since Pocket e-Sword doesn't officially support the Anagignoskomena.) Those issues may hamper synchronization between e-Sword and Pocket e-Sword.

Rather than synchronizing, or attempting to synchronize the study notes, create/merge a commentary file that contains updated entries from both the e-Sword and Pocket e-Sword study not files. Doing this would also simplify the distribution of one's study notes. (Users are free to create their own notes about one's commentary --- two or more instances of e-Sword can be run at the same time.)

Verse Lists
A list of verses, without any context, is meaningless. The filename is the only way to ascribe a meaning to the resource. And yet, even with that limitation, they can be useful. Red_Letter.lst (Not currently available as an e-Sword resource) indicates which verses are the Words of Jesus.

The Documentary Hypothesis Collection (Not publicly distributed as an e-Sword resource) is probably unique, in both scope, and number of resources it contains. It too, is a victim of "meaningless filenames", that reduce the utility and functionality of the specific resource.

Most lists are best constructed as either dictionaries ( For example Endtime Prophecy topical verse lists http://www.endtimeprophecy.net/EPN-1/GroupPages/grupvrs1.html) or Harmony resources. For example, The_Documentary_Hypothesis.har (Not publicly available for e-Sword.) I'm not convinced that there are enough verse lists out there, that would be functionally usable, and created, to justify the creation of a tool to import them into e-Sword. On the flip side, a tool could automatically validate the verses, to ensure that they theoretically exist. (For example, 1 Daniel 3:95. )
