Closed Lists

Two years ago e-Sword-Users.org was created as a place where users of Pocket e-Sword and e-Sword could distribute resources they created, and discuss e-Sword and Pocket e-Sword. The aim was to be a one stop source for e-Sword and Pocket e-Sword.

My original plan was to migrate all of the lists on YahooGroups that I moderate, save for eSword and Pocket e-Sword, to e-Sword-users.org, by June 2009.

I have finally closed the following support lists:
* Catholic e-Sword;
* e-Sword Islam;
* e-Sword4Linux;
* e-Sword4Mac;
* e-Sword4Vista;
* e-Sword Chat;
* e-Sword Copyright;
* e-Sword Debate;
* e-Sword Live!
* e-Sword Mormon;
* e-Sword Off Topic;
* e-Sword Doctrine Theology;
* e-Sword Unofficial Users Group;
* e-Sword Baptist;
* eSwordPrayer;
* Gnostic e-Sword;
* Jewish e-Sword;
* The e-Sword Unofficial Users Group;
* Unbiased e-Sword

Spam links and e-Sword

You know that software is popular when spammers mis-appropriate it.

Installing e-Sword on Navman is going to be difficult. Navman has been building GPS systems for marine use for years.   Their hardware does not allow users to install software.

The sole reason for including that phrase is to increase the number of hits on the site.  And thus, to push up their advertizing revenue.

e-sword 10: Conceptual UI

Andrew J posted an interesting concept for the UI for e-Sword 10.

http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_U78lpiet_0I/TPuI5TRvRlI/AAAAAAAADJA/JD0wghJV9ec/s1600/E-Sword+Concept+copy.jpg

(I'd post his UI, but it under copyright.  I've got 100 000 unread emails in my inbox right now, otherwise I'd email him for permission. When my email is that stacked up, I don't see responses to my emails for weeks, if at all.)

From my POV, the most functional thing about his design is the coloured tabs. Ideally, users could select colours based on some specific attribute in the resource.

I don't see the number of resources one has, as being a usability issue with that design, _IF_ single row tabs are used.

With multi-row tabs. usability is always going to be an issue.

Let's face it.  How much of the text for the Bible, Dictionary, or Commentary that is open can you read there?  (Clicking on the image should display it full size in its own window. For some reason, my screenshots are illegible when shrunk down.)

One thing I don't see in Andrew's UI, is where the statistical analysis of passages that e-Sword can do, is.  That isn't the only function of e-Sword that most people don't know about, that I don't see there.

e-Sword 8.9.1

On 1 January 2011, Rick released e-Sword 9.8.1.

I have played with it some. (I've been writing documentation for e-Sword 7.9.2An e-Sword Users Manual.)

e-Sword 9.8.1 sports a new menu item: Download.

The changes page proclaims: "A New Module Downloader is now built into the program." e-Sword has had a download function since the days of e-Sword 7.9. What is new, is the configuration, and amount of data about the resource that it displays.

The first column states if the resource is installed, or can be downloaded. I'm not sure what it is keying on, because for topical files, it said everything could be downloaded. However, everything in that list is already installed. I noticed the same thing with other resources.

The second column --- Caption --- is what appear in the tab.

The third column, Title, is interesting. The title is either Blue or Black. Resources that can be downloaded are in blue. Installed resources are black. Resources that have been released within the last year are blue.

The fourth column, Comments, provides copyright information.

The fifth column, Size, is the size of the resource in bytes, on one's hard drive.

The sixth column, Date, is the date the resource was released in e-Sword format. If the date is in red, it was released within the last year. If it was released more than a year ago, it is in black. (I did notice a couple of exceptions, but that seems to be the pattern.)

To download and install the new resource, simply click on the title. That is what the tooltip says to do. I tried it, and received various error messages stating that it was unable to connect to the Internet. These messages are not unexpected, since I run e-Sword with WINE, on a Linux. box Dansguardian probably enhances the connectivity issues.

One potential issue --- especially for new users --- is finding the Bible Illustrations resource from AMG. It is not listed in the Resource Download Manager. It can be purchased from http://www.e-sword.net/illustrations.html.  This is the resource that actives the Sermon Illustration Component.

The changes log also states that Search Routines have been enhanced. Since I had not finished comprehensive testing of e-Sword 9.7.2, I'm not sure what is new, and what is not.

The following Regex search can be done:
^(?=.*?\blove\b)((?!god).)*$
to produce the following results:

If I give away all I have, and if I deliver my body to be burned, but have not love, I gain nothing.

(1Co 13:4)
Love is patient and kind; love is not jealous or boastful;

(1Co 13:13)
So faith, hope, love abide, these three; but the greatest of these is love.

(1Co 14:1)
Make love your aim, and earnestly desire the spiritual gifts, especially that you may prophesy.

(1Co 16:14)
Let all that you do be done in love.

(1Co 16:22)
If any one has no love for the Lord, let him be accursed. Our Lord, come!

(1Co 16:24)
My love be with you all in Christ Jesus. Amen.

(2Co 2:4)
For I wrote you out of much affliction and anguish of heart and with many tears, not to cause you pain but to let you know the abundant love that I have for you.

(2Co 2:8)
So I beg you to reaffirm your love for him.

(2Co 5:14)
For the love of Christ controls us, because we are convinced that one has died for all; therefore all have died.

(2Co 6:6)
by purity, knowledge, forbearance, kindness, the Holy Spirit, genuine love,

(2Co 8:7)
Now as you excel in everything--in faith, in utterance, in knowledge, in all earnestness, and in your love for us--see that you excel in this gracious work also.

(2Co 8:8)
I say this not as a command, but to prove by the earnestness of others that your love also is genuine.

(2Co 8:24)
So give proof, before the churches, of your love and of our boasting about you to these men.

(2Co 11:11)
And why? Because I do not love you? God knows I do!

(2Co 12:15)
I will most gladly spend and be spent for your souls. If I love you the more, am I to be loved the less?

(2Co 13:11)
Finally, brethren, farewell. Mend your ways, heed my appeal, agree with one another, live in peace, and the God of love and peace will be with you.

(2Co 13:14)
The grace of the Lord Jesus Christ and the love of God and the fellowship of the Holy Spirit be with you all.

(Gal 5:6)
For in Christ Jesus neither circumcision nor uncircumcision is of any avail, but faith working through love.

(Gal 5:13)
For you were called to freedom, brethren; only do not use your freedom as an opportunity for the flesh, but through love be servants of one another.

(Gal 5:14)
For the whole law is fulfilled in one word, "You shall love your neighbor as yourself."

(Gal 5:22)
But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness,

(Eph 1:5)
He destined us in love to be his sons through Jesus Christ, according to the purpose of his will,

(Eph 1:15)
For this reason, because I have heard of your faith in the Lord Jesus and your love toward all the saints,

(Eph 2:4)
But God, who is rich in mercy, out of the great love with which he loved us,

(Eph 3:17)
and that Christ may dwell in your hearts through faith; that you, being rooted and grounded in love,

(Eph 3:19)
and to know the love of Christ which surpasses knowledge, that you may be filled with all the fulness of God.

(Eph 4:2)
with all lowliness and meekness, with patience, forbearing one another in love,

(Eph 4:15)
Rather, speaking the truth in love, we are to grow up in every way into him who is the head, into Christ,

(Eph 4:16)
from whom the whole body, joined and knit together by every joint with which it is supplied, when each part is working properly, makes bodily growth and upbuilds itself in love.

(Eph 5:2)
And walk in love, as Christ loved us and gave himself up for us, a fragrant offering and sacrifice to God.

(Eph 5:25)
Husbands, love your wives, as Christ loved the church and gave himself up for her,

(Eph 5:28)
Even so husbands should love their wives as their own bodies. He who loves his wife loves himself.

(Eph 5:33)
however, let each one of you love his wife as himself, and let the wife see that she respects her husband.

(Eph 6:23)
Peace be to the brethren, and love with faith, from God the Father and the Lord Jesus Christ.

(Eph 6:24)
Grace be with all who love our Lord Jesus Christ with love undying.

(Php 1:9)
And it is my prayer that your love may abound more and more, with knowledge and all discernment,

(Php 1:16)
The latter do it out of love, knowing that I am put here for the defense of the gospel;

(Php 2:1)
So if there is any encouragement in Christ, any incentive of love, any participation in the Spirit, any affection and sympathy,

(Php 2:2)
complete my joy by being of the same mind, having the same love, being in full accord and of one mind.

(Php 4:1)
Therefore, my brethren, whom I love and long for, my joy and crown, stand firm thus in the Lord, my beloved.

(Col 1:4)
because we have heard of your faith in Christ Jesus and of the love which you have for all the saints,

(Col 1:8)
and has made known to us your love in the Spirit.

(Col 2:2)
that their hearts may be encouraged as they are knit together in love, to have all the riches of assured understanding and the knowledge of God's mystery, of Christ,

(Col 3:14)
And above all these put on love, which binds everything together in perfect harmony.

(Col 3:19)
Husbands, love your wives, and do not be harsh with them.

(1Th 1:3)
remembering before our God and Father your work of faith and labor of love and steadfastness of hope in our Lord Jesus Christ.

(1Th 3:6)
But now that Timothy has come to us from you, and has brought us the good news of your faith and love and reported that you always remember us kindly and long to see us, as we long to see you--

(1Th 3:12)
and may the Lord make you increase and abound in love to one another and to all men, as we do to you,

(1Th 4:9)
But concerning love of the brethren you have no need to have any one write to you, for you yourselves have been taught by God to love one another;

(1Th 4:10)
and indeed you do love all the brethren throughout Macedo'nia. But we exhort you, brethren, to do so more and more,

(1Th 5:8)
But, since we belong to the day, let us be sober, and put on the breastplate of faith and love, and for a helmet the hope of salvation.

(1Th 5:13)
and to esteem them very highly in love because of their work. Be at peace among yourselves.

(2Th 1:3)
We are bound to give thanks to God always for you, brethren, as is fitting, because your faith is growing abundantly, and the love of every one of you for one another is increasing.

(2Th 2:10)
and with all wicked deception for those who are to perish, because they refused to love the truth and so be saved.

(2Th 3:5)
May the Lord direct your hearts to the love of God and to the steadfastness of Christ.

(1Ti 1:5)
whereas the aim of our charge is love that issues from a pure heart and a good conscience and sincere faith.

(1Ti 1:14)
and the grace of our Lord overflowed for me with the faith and love that are in Christ Jesus.

(1Ti 2:15)
Yet woman will be saved through bearing children, if she continues in faith and love and holiness, with modesty.

(1Ti 4:12)
Let no one despise your youth, but set the believers an example in speech and conduct, in love, in faith, in purity.

(1Ti 6:10)
For the love of money is the root of all evils; it is through this craving that some have wandered away from the faith and pierced their hearts with many pangs.

(2Ti 1:7)
for God did not give us a spirit of timidity but a spirit of power and love and self-control.

(2Ti 1:13)
Follow the pattern of the sound words which you have heard from me, in the faith and love which are in Christ Jesus;

(2Ti 2:22)
So shun youthful passions and aim at righteousness, faith, love, and peace, along with those who call upon the Lord from a pure heart.

(2Ti 3:10)
Now you have observed my teaching, my conduct, my aim in life, my faith, my patience, my love, my steadfastness,

(2Ti 4:10)
For Demas, in love with this present world, has deserted me and gone to Thessaloni'ca; Crescens has gone to Galatia, Titus to Dalmatia.

(Tit 2:2)
Bid the older men be temperate, serious, sensible, sound in faith, in love, and in steadfastness.

(Tit 2:4)
and so train the young women to love their husbands and children,

(Tit 3:15)
All who are with me send greetings to you. Greet those who love us in the faith. Grace be with you all.

(Phm 1:5)
because I hear of your love and of the faith which you have toward the Lord Jesus and all the saints,

(Phm 1:7)
For I have derived much joy and comfort from your love, my brother, because the hearts of the saints have been refreshed through you.

(Phm 1:9)
yet for love's sake I prefer to appeal to you--I, Paul, an ambassador and now a prisoner also for Christ Jesus--

(Heb 6:10)
For God is not so unjust as to overlook your work and the love which you showed for his sake in serving the saints, as you still do.

(Heb 10:24)
and let us consider how to stir up one another to love and good works,

(Heb 13:1)
Let brotherly love continue.

(Heb 13:5)
Keep your life free from love of money, and be content with what you have; for he has said, "I will never fail you nor forsake you."

(Jas 1:12)
Blessed is the man who endures trial, for when he has stood the test he will receive the crown of life which God has promised to those who love him.

(Jas 2:5)
Listen, my beloved brethren. Has not God chosen those who are poor in the world to be rich in faith and heirs of the kingdom which he has promised to those who love him?

(Jas 2:8)
If you really fulfil the royal law, according to the scripture, "You shall love your neighbor as yourself," you do well.

(1Pe 1:8)
Without having seen him you love him; though you do not now see him you believe in him and rejoice with unutterable and exalted joy.

(1Pe 1:22)
Having purified your souls by your obedience to the truth for a sincere love of the brethren, love one another earnestly from the heart.

(1Pe 3:8)
Finally, all of you, have unity of spirit, sympathy, love of the brethren, a tender heart and a humble mind.

(1Pe 3:10)
For "He that would love life and see good days, let him keep his tongue from evil and his lips from speaking guile;

(1Pe 4:8)
Above all hold unfailing your love for one another, since love covers a multitude of sins.

(1Pe 5:14)
Greet one another with the kiss of love. Peace to all of you that are in Christ.

(1Jn 2:5)
but whoever keeps his word, in him truly love for God is perfected. By this we may be sure that we are in him:

(1Jn 2:15)
Do not love the world or the things in the world. If any one loves the world, love for the Father is not in him.

(1Jn 3:1)
See what love the Father has given us, that we should be called children of God; and so we are. The reason why the world does not know us is that it did not know him.

(1Jn 3:10)
By this it may be seen who are the children of God, and who are the children of the devil: whoever does not do right is not of God, nor he who does not love his brother.

(1Jn 3:11)
For this is the message which you have heard from the beginning, that we should love one another,

(1Jn 3:14)
We know that we have passed out of death into life, because we love the brethren. He who does not love abides in death.

(1Jn 3:16)
By this we know love, that he laid down his life for us; and we ought to lay down our lives for the brethren.

(1Jn 3:17)
But if any one has the world's goods and sees his brother in need, yet closes his heart against him, how does God's love abide in him?

(1Jn 3:18)
Little children, let us not love in word or speech but in deed and in truth.

(1Jn 3:23)
And this is his commandment, that we should believe in the name of his Son Jesus Christ and love one another, just as he has commanded us.

(1Jn 4:7)
Beloved, let us love one another; for love is of God, and he who loves is born of God and knows God.

(1Jn 4:8)
He who does not love does not know God; for God is love.

(1Jn 4:9)
In this the love of God was made manifest among us, that God sent his only Son into the world, so that we might live through him.

(1Jn 4:10)
In this is love, not that we loved God but that he loved us and sent his Son to be the expiation for our sins.

(1Jn 4:11)
Beloved, if God so loved us, we also ought to love one another.

(1Jn 4:12)
No man has ever seen God; if we love one another, God abides in us and his love is perfected in us.

(1Jn 4:16)
So we know and believe the love God has for us. God is love, and he who abides in love abides in God, and God abides in him.

(1Jn 4:17)
In this is love perfected with us, that we may have confidence for the day of judgment, because as he is so are we in this world.

(1Jn 4:18)
There is no fear in love, but perfect love casts out fear. For fear has to do with punishment, and he who fears is not perfected in love.

(1Jn 4:19)
We love, because he first loved us.

(1Jn 4:20)
If any one says, "I love God," and hates his brother, he is a liar; for he who does not love his brother whom he has seen, cannot love God whom he has not seen.

(1Jn 4:21)
And this commandment we have from him, that he who loves God should love his brother also.

(1Jn 5:2)
By this we know that we love the children of God, when we love God and obey his commandments.

(1Jn 5:3)
For this is the love of God, that we keep his commandments. And his commandments are not burdensome.

(2Jn 1:1)
The elder to the elect lady and her children, whom I love in the truth, and not only I but also all who know the truth,

(2Jn 1:3)
Grace, mercy, and peace will be with us, from God the Father and from Jesus Christ the Father's Son, in truth and love.

(2Jn 1:5)
And now I beg you, lady, not as though I were writing you a new commandment, but the one we have had from the beginning, that we love one another.

(2Jn 1:6)
And this is love, that we follow his commandments; this is the commandment, as you have heard from the beginning, that you follow love.

(3Jn 1:1)
The elder to the beloved Ga'ius, whom I love in the truth.

(3Jn 1:6)
who have testified to your love before the church. You will do well to send them on their journey as befits God's service.

(Jud 1:2)
May mercy, peace, and love be multiplied to you.

(Jud 1:12)
These are blemishes on your love feasts, as they boldly carouse together, looking after themselves; waterless clouds, carried along by winds; fruitless trees in late autumn, twice dead, uprooted;

(Jud 1:21)
keep yourselves in the love of God; wait for the mercy of our Lord Jesus Christ unto eternal life.

(Rev 2:4)
But I have this against you, that you have abandoned the love you had at first.

(Rev 2:19)
"'I know your works, your love and faith and service and patient endurance, and that your latter works exceed the first.

(Rev 3:19)
Those whom I love, I reprove and chasten; so be zealous and repent.

I think that there have been more changes to searching in languages that do not use the Latin writing system:

* I could do successful searches in the Allepo Codex, but not the BHS nor WLC.  However, the latter two contain nikkud and cantillation, whilst the former does not;
* Searching in Greek seemed to work in more resources than previously;
* I've always had issues in searching Chinese text.  The test searches I did seemed more accurate than those I've previously done.  More precisely, the number of hits was much closed to the number obtained when searching the same phrase in English, using the KJV-A.
* I've never tried search in Japanese before, but it seemed to work correctly.  On the other hand, I received less hits for "神" than I expected;
* I don't remember how well Korean search used to do, but "천지를" produced 15 hits.  By way of contrast, The Cambridge KJV-A produced 27 hits for the exact phrase "Heaven and Earth";
* I couldn't find my Aramaic resources, so I did not do any searches with that language.:(
[It turns out that I had not yet installed them on my desktop.  I have not yet migrated my laptop to e-Sword 9.8.1.  That will happen when I release An e-Sword Users Manual.]

I did not text "Extended Search" for e-Sword 7.9.2.  I could do sucessful Regex searches with Extended search in e-Sword 9.8.1.

Something else I noticed is that resources that do not conform to e-Sword Resource Format Specification 2 are not going to be searchable.  Those points of failure might not be obvious in English language content, but they are very obvious in Spanish content.  In resources that do not use the Latin writing system, the failure is immediately obvious.
